What is the TEXAS ACP?

The State Board for Educator Certification approved, TEXAS Alternative Certification Program, is an intensive one year educator preparation program designed to identify, select, train and certify top quality teacher-candidates through a series of workshops, seminars, field activities, and an internship.

Alternative certification programs evolved out of a perceived need to not only address teacher shortages, but also to improve the quality of teaching.  The increasing need for teachers due to student population increases, teacher resignations and retirements, concern for the quality of teaching, and the inability of educational institutions to keep up with the demand for highly qualified teachers across the State of Texas and the nation, has led to the development of Alternative Education Programs.

Historically, university teacher education programs have been the primary source of teachers for school districts.  Their teacher preparation programs are approved by the State.  The TEXAS ACP is not a university program.  However, like university certification programs, it is state approved.  Our institution is not accredited by the Texas Higher Coordinating Board, because we don't have to be.  We do not have to be accredited as an institution because we offer individuals the opportunity to become  Texas certified teachers and do not confer individuals with degrees.  We are a certification program!

We are proud to announce that on May 8, 2006, Deputy Associate Commissioner  Raymond F. Glynn, Ed.D.  of the Texas Education Agency, notified us that the TEXAS ACP has received the rating of "ACCREDITED" under the accountability System for Educator Preparation!
